Description:

UPDATE: Cold As Hell: SE has been released and undergone some additional bug-fixing. The download link here is the final version.

Cold As Hell: SE requires GZDoom 1.1.06 or higher.

DESCRIPTION: Cold As Hell is a total conversion set in the 1950's at a weapons research facility in Greenland. The usual Bad Stuff Happens (TM) and you, a US Marine, must clean up the mess.

STORY: Sergeant Henry Mills is a man accustomed to combat. He was a decorated soldier in the Pacific theater during the war, showing incredible valor against the Japanese troops there. However, returning back to the States left him with a somewhat less interesting assignment than battling in the Pacific jungles: head up security at Weapons Research Station 46-A, a government facility buried deep in the heart of the coldest part of Greenland.

As far as he was concerned, this would be a nice, boring way to finish out his time with the Corps...

Looks really cool! pun intended.

cccp_leha writes:11.08.2004, 23:22 GMT+1

Looks bery nice, the shotgun sprite is cool (no pun intended :), and the hudmessages are cleverly used.

dethtoll writes:11.08.2004, 23:37 GMT+1

looks great, i like the new HUD. looks pretty... wait for it... neat. yeah, i'm -individual-.

MasterOfPuppets writes:12.08.2004, 00:02 GMT+1

very cool stuff. very original, at least in Doom. (damn WWII games, their everywhere!)

Nmn writes:12.08.2004, 01:56 GMT+1

ace writes:18.08.2004, 01:12 GMT+1

Hey is that the thompson from RtCW?

GrayLancer writes:18.08.2004, 07:42 GMT+1

Call of Duty, actually. I got all the period weapon sprites from there, except for one.

deathbringer writes:21.08.2004, 21:28 GMT+1

This sounds awesome, i like the idea of a 1950's setting, certianly unusual. I am planning a wad set on an oil rig in 1985, and in farmland set in 1996, but those wont have hellspawn. Whats the story of the hellspawn appearing in this one? or would taht be giving it away?

CoolD00d writes:30.08.2004, 00:45 GMT+1

so were exactly can we download this ace wad from?

ace writes:30.08.2004, 23:05 GMT+1
edited 30.08.2004, 23:09 GMT+1

it's not out, that's why it's IN PROGRESS. *sigh*

oh yeah, and when can we expect it 2 be released?

and, i'm new w/ ZDoom, so i don't know alot of it's functions, but is that window in pic #1 being broken? cool effect.

GrayLancer writes:19.09.2004, 16:54 GMT+1

Probably be another month or so before it's finished, work's been slow since I started class again, but I've been picking up recently (after re-doing some music resources).

The story is a little different (but not much different) from the standard "hellspawn come in through a gate", but I'll save that for the finished WAD.

The window is indeed being broken. It's a pretty simple, but rather effective trick which looks nice in motion.

Blair Cahue writes:28.09.2004, 15:18 GMT+1

how u make window break?

GrayLancer writes:02.10.2004, 03:47 GMT+1

The window breaking is done like this:

-Make a window texture (just flat white with some texturing)
-Make a three-frame animation of the window shattering
-Set up a two-sided transparent line which is triggered by projectile hits and has the window texture.
-Set this line's special to run a script which animates the breaking and then clears the line's special and sets it to not block anything.

I've set it up so that the specials are set by a script in the beginning of the level based on line numbers, so it's easy to set up a lot of breaking windows for the levels.

It's possible to do a better job with the windows, but this is good enough for my purposes.

And Nmn is right, go there for some awesome advice and stuff.

wildweasel writes:11.10.2004, 05:20 GMT+1

This one looks pretty impressive, and it's on my list of Wads I'd Like To Play.

Jow writes:12.10.2004, 22:10 GMT+1

Wow. Cool. Can player use those ladders seen in the 2nd shot?

MasterOfPuppets writes:13.10.2004, 00:00 GMT+1

the ejecting brass is cool

Dittohead writes:13.10.2004, 01:55 GMT+1

SgtCrispy writes:13.10.2004, 04:52 GMT+1

Looking spiffy! Can't wait to play!

EarthQuake writes:13.10.2004, 06:02 GMT+1

That is so BADASS.

GrayLancer writes:14.10.2004, 04:50 GMT+1

Yes, the player just has to push up against the ladders and they'll climb them. I believe that Cyb used this trick in the "Helm's Deep" wad. You can't really climb down, but it doesn't matter since no falling damage is enabled.

Searcher writes:14.10.2004, 18:22 GMT+1

Brrr! Got cold just looking at the screens. It sure is well named. And the screens look great. I will sure be waiting for it.

Nice!

dethtoll writes:15.10.2004, 03:11 GMT+1

maybe i'm crazy. i could swear i see a mirror effect in that first new shot.

GrayLancer writes:15.10.2004, 04:31 GMT+1

dethtoll: No, not crazy. It's a little trick I've used to a limited extent in a couple areas of one level.

dethtoll writes:18.10.2004, 15:09 GMT+1

maybe it's just me (and it just occurred to me) but wouldn't "a cold day in hell" be a more appropriate name for this wad?

GrayLancer writes:19.10.2004, 17:15 GMT+1

I've become kind of attached to my crazy title, but it is a pretty good idea. Maybe "Cold As Hell: A Cold Day in Hell (A Cold Hell Adventure)"?

Nmn writes:19.10.2004, 17:16 GMT+1

Brr... it's cold

Dyne writes:19.10.2004, 21:15 GMT+1

This looks really cool. Maybe you could use the monsters.wad released by the zdoom community or are you going for total realism ,fighting terrorists and stuff?

GrayLancer writes:20.10.2004, 22:51 GMT+1

No, it uses monsters. Mostly Doom monsters, plus a couple re-worked Doom monsters. The story behind their appearance is a bit different, but they're pretty much the same. There are also soldiers, but they're on your side.

By the time the resource wad was released, I was a bit far in to start adding in stuff from it. Otherwise I probably would have. Still, it works well with the original monsters. The health/ammo dynamics have been changed a lot (it'll all be explained when the WAD is released), so the tactics you use will have to be slightly different.

joe2 writes:21.10.2004, 03:16 GMT+1

looks neat when will it be downloadable

GrayLancer writes:22.10.2004, 06:13 GMT+1

Probably in a couple of weeks. No promises, but I'm very close to being done.

icer writes:02.11.2004, 02:21 GMT+1

NiGHTMARE writes:06.11.2004, 04:54 GMT+1

ice: it does indeed look awesome, but I'm afraid it's set a decade too late to be WW2 ;).

dethtoll writes:06.11.2004, 22:18 GMT+1

i absolutely can't wait for this. i'd actually stop playing thief long enough to play this.

EarthQuake writes:07.11.2004, 13:37 GMT+1

One thing that really bugs me is how one weapon is from a side view, although the original weapons with a normal view are still there. Isn't that rather inconsistant?

Nmn writes:07.11.2004, 16:36 GMT+1

This has already been discussed a zillion times.

GrayLancer writes:09.11.2004, 17:55 GMT+1

There are four weapons from the side view and three from the old head-on view (the three that are either modified Doom graphics or original Doom graphics). Just pretend your character is holding the shotguns (and flamethrower) in a different position for whatever reason, I guess.

Truthfully, it just doesn't bother me enough for me to change it. Never really thought about it, actually.

Shockwav3 writes:19.11.2004, 23:04 GMT+1

YAY, RELEASED!
gonna go play this now.

DI writes:20.11.2004, 00:18 GMT+1

This wad looks awesome, especially shot2. Seriously, when I look at that shot, it makes me home sick. I miss the snow.

Mancubus II writes:20.11.2004, 02:16 GMT+1

The nodes seem to have been built poorly. If it runs slow, rebuild the nodes and it should run smooth.

NiGHTMARE writes:20.11.2004, 03:06 GMT+1

Indeed, most of the time I was getting something like 1 FPS even at 320x200 with the snow turned off (and normally I play ZDoom at perfectly acceptable framerates in 1024x768, so it's not my machine to blame). I didn't think of the node rebuilding thing, I'll have to try it out.

I really hope it works, since from what I saw, this is one heck of cool mod :).

MasterOfPuppets writes:20.11.2004, 06:06 GMT+1

really awesome, and scarier than Doom 3 :)

the framerate thing sucks though...

Chronoteeth writes:20.11.2004, 06:16 GMT+1

Kristus writes:20.11.2004, 10:38 GMT+1

Nmn writes:20.11.2004, 11:40 GMT+1

Zdoom-94- Turning the snow off does not work. It's still there and blocks me from having an enjoyable experience with this promising wad.
/me also waits for fixed version.
And use ogg's, not mp3's ;)

iori writes:20.11.2004, 11:46 GMT+1

Zdoom 94 is somewhat ass, 63 is better in most respects...

NiGHTMARE writes:20.11.2004, 12:47 GMT+1
edited 20.11.2004, 12:52 GMT+1

.63 is better in no aspects. The only bugs left in .94 are even more minor than the ones in .63, though CAH shows that some of these minor bugs can turn into major ones in certain wads. However, the same is true of some of the .63 bugs.

GrayLancer writes:20.11.2004, 16:53 GMT+1

The nodes aren't built to save space, so ZDoom is building them on the fly. I'll try pre-building them, then re-upload. I'll also look at the snow on/off thing, although I don't know why it wouldn't work, it just uses a global variable or two to record whether or not the script should be on or off.

Tormentor667 writes:20.11.2004, 17:31 GMT+1

Well, I also tried the map with .63 and .94 and both times, the map runs terribly slow and the snow can't be switched off :(

killingblair writes:20.11.2004, 17:39 GMT+1

21 mb + dial up = :( i'll download it in a internet cafe and put it on a disk

GrayLancer writes:20.11.2004, 17:57 GMT+1
edited 20.11.2004, 18:09 GMT+1

Yes, the slow speed is pretty consistent. I really should have used a slower computer to test it, as mine is pretty fast and ran it all right. When I put it on my fiancee's computer, I started noticing the slow speed.

I'm uploading a version now which should have vastly improved speed.

As for the snow, I don't have any idea why it isn't working. I've tested it on .63a and .91, and it can be switched off on both. Everyone having problems with that, can you post some details, including what level you tried to toggle it on. A couple levels won't let you turn off snow, including the intro sequence and the first play level. The other levels should all let you toggle it. If you're having problems with it working on those (map03 and on), post details about it.

Oh, and the size is going up to 25 mb with the nodes built. Sorry, but people are right about the speed. I feel like a dumbass for releasing it without checking that.

Shockwav3 writes:21.11.2004, 00:23 GMT+1
edited 21.11.2004, 00:45 GMT+1

tried the new version, still runs very laggy :/

hope you find out why, can't wait to play this actually.

EDIT: i just decided to fuck a bit with it to see if i can unlag it on my own and in fact i did, somehow if you remove all the mapspot (9001) things from the maps, they run WAY, WAY faster. this will remove the snow tho :/

GrayLancer writes:21.11.2004, 01:18 GMT+1

The new version should still be in incoming; is it actually available for download? If it's around 21-22mb, it's the old version.

The version in newstuff right now is the old version. When they clear the new version, I'd appreciate some feedback on whether or not it's working better. I hope I can get this running at acceptable fps for most people.

BetaSword writes:21.11.2004, 08:16 GMT+1
edited 21.11.2004, 08:47 GMT+1

Well, I have the new version, but it's still slow. Tried turning off the snow (F12), but it doesn't seem to do anything at all. Snow keeps falling, either way. And I'd rather not resort to deleting map spots, as I don't know whether or not they are used for anything besides snow... Bah. Any way to help that?

Edit: Ok, I think I've determind how to get rid of the snow without altering any other parts... Delete all things with a thing tag of 900-905 on all the levels with snow. This at least works on the intro level, and greatly increases speed. There are still places where things slow down a lot, though, like when the plane is going down...

darkhaven3 writes:21.11.2004, 09:19 GMT+1

THIS. MOD. IS. FUCKING. AWESOME.

GrayLancer writes:21.11.2004, 16:07 GMT+1
edited 21.11.2004, 16:08 GMT+1

Yes, the snow on the intro level is handled differently than most of the rest of the game. I figured that it wouldn't be enough to slow down people's computers on the first couple levels, but I can easily change it so that the snow on/off thing will work on all levels.

Right now, it'll work on all levels except the first two. If you want, you can skip ahead to map03 and start the hub without any problems. The snow toggle will work on those maps.

I'm going to update it today so that the snow on/off will work on all the maps. Expect another update soon. I'll probably upload it as a "patch" of sorts, so you won't have to do another 25 meg download.

The snow is indeed always tids 900-905. I'll post that update soon, and you won't have to worry about it though.

Shockwav3 writes:21.11.2004, 20:42 GMT+1

another thing, maybe try to realize the trees another way than making them things, from my point of view the horrible slowdowns come from the maps using up to 12.000 things.

dethtoll writes:21.11.2004, 21:15 GMT+1

yay! released! *stops playing thief 2 long enough to play this*

BetaSword writes:21.11.2004, 21:30 GMT+1

Ah, that's why the snow wasn't stopping at all... But yeah, it was causing major slowdown on the intro and first levels... Like, almost Doom 3 levels of slow down... (My computer is crap.)

dethtoll writes:21.11.2004, 23:46 GMT+1

noticing a few problems... (using 2.0.94)

for starters, the reloading system breaks after a while. example: found myself able to shoot the shotgun even while it was reloading (it would not disappear.) SSG behaved like a machine gun, and ate shells even into the negative range.

massive slowdown seems to be caused by the snow. too bad, it's a nice touch, but i figure it's not so bad to keep it on the first level (i'm a sucker for grimm und kholde winter's turbulent frost pierces my black heart with the icy daggers of unending remorse during the black nights on the very very very very very very very forsaken mountain of the necrogoat type shit like that.)

beyond that, very enjoyable, if very hard. (maybe i should play on a lower skill setting...)

GrayLancer writes:22.11.2004, 00:57 GMT+1
edited 22.11.2004, 01:19 GMT+1

Patch released to fix the snow-not-stopping bug:

ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/newstuff/cah_p1.zip

All righty. If you're REALLY having trouble with the FPS, a no-tree patch should be in newstuff soon. It'll be cah_p2.zip, and it will completely eliminate all trees except for some special ones at the end which are handled differently. This will look weird, and alter possible tactics slightly, but it will speed up the game for people with slower computers. It's also a tiny patch, as all it does is change the DEHACKED lump to can the trees.

Ryan Hart writes:22.11.2004, 03:44 GMT+1

After trying to reload a gun, it doesn't bring the weapon back up, so I end up being stuck defenseless. (latest zdoom, .94)

Any idea on the cause?

darkhaven3 writes:22.11.2004, 18:49 GMT+1

Use ZDoom 2.0.63a to play this. That's what I used, and there were no problems at all.

dethtoll writes:23.11.2004, 03:10 GMT+1

does the reload system break?

aLco13 writes:23.11.2004, 07:48 GMT+1

i've noticed the reaload breaks roughly around when you enter one of the sub-levels in the hub for the second time (to me it happended in Housing and\or Power station). but once it happens i't dosnt go away when you leave the level, which is real annoying because i've saved with the reaload bug on.it happens with both .94 and 63a,

Nmn writes:23.11.2004, 12:11 GMT+1

ace writes:24.11.2004, 01:10 GMT+1

Good thing I have Comcast :P this won't take long!

darkhaven3 writes:24.11.2004, 11:42 GMT+1

No, reloading never breaks. Everything behaves as it should, and snow turns off and everything.

Nmn writes:24.11.2004, 18:00 GMT+1

I hope this works now. /me doesn't want to download 25 MB's for nothing again >:(

BetaSword writes:24.11.2004, 21:21 GMT+1

Just use .63a to play it on. That way, there will be no problems (besides maybe some slowdown) whatsoever. Trust me, I've been playing it, nothing's wrong with it at all. Reloading does not break at any time in the game, weapons don't act weird... It's all nice and normal on .63a.

GrayLancer writes:25.11.2004, 01:50 GMT+1

Yes, I think I will do that. I need somewhere to upload it while doing that though, any ideas?

If the weapon goes down but doesn't come back up, you should just be able to switch back.

Nuxius writes:27.11.2005, 05:05 GMT+1

If I'm not mistaken, there is a patch that does just that; it removes all the trees.

paradox_tn writes:27.11.2005, 06:35 GMT+1

Well, that patch doesn't removed all the trees. Just the first couple of levels, not all of them. Their must be a way to make this mod play alot more smoother than a fast computers, if I only had one that no one has problems running this on fast machines...crap!

I am only now finding this work of art! I must say it honestly is like my dream WAD! Its damn near perfect! The setting, realistic touch, and story fit together really well. I absolutely love tundra/winter horror stories, so the setting really drew me in.

GreyLancer; Thank you for your time commited to this masterpiece! I look forward to your next releases(assuming there are any XD )

I've recently played Cold as Hell, and found myself stuck in the staff housing area.
Looked for hours, but never found the last access code.
Upon searching the forums, I found I wasn't alone, but nobody else really offered a solution (except for idclip, but that ruins the fun of the game quite a bit).

After a bit of futzing, I've found a way to fix the problem.

Enter "puke 11" into the console.
Each time you enter this, it will give you an access code.

Just collect all the codes that are there, then once you get to the library, punch this into the console and everything should be fine. Obviously you can just bypass the whole staff level by typing it in 8 times, but thats no fun, you cheating bastard.

Hope I managed to help somebody.

Great to hear that this is getting the revamp and update it deserves! This is definitely one of my favorite ZDoom WADs of all time. Looking forward to its release... again.

great man, good stuff, i like the tommy gun, is it replacing the chaingun or a DECORATE weapon?

GrayLancer writes:19.08.2008, 11:42 GMT+1

It originally replaced the chaingun using DEH, but has since been modified to be a much more robust DECORATE weapon, along with everything else (except the fists, which are still DEH-based, but that'll probably change too).

I've been making notes of the various complaints so I can fix common issues people had with the gameplay (like the issue with the access codes mentioned a couple comments above this one) as well as fixing technical problems (and there sure are a lot of 'em!).

I like Vanilla kind of Doom, but not these D: (guns,textures)..

GrayLancer writes:15.12.2008, 09:26 GMT+1

Yes, if you're looking for a more vanilla Doom experience, I'd recommend you skip this one.

Btw. There's an issue with this. Any version from like 1.200 and up it just seems to either crash on start-up, or the first level loops over and over.

However, it does work with the older version that you mentioned in the which is V 1.106

Cacogargoyle writes:25.12.2009, 20:10 GMT+1

I don't know which is better, this wad or the unmatched creator behind it!

angelus_04 writes:26.12.2009, 17:45 GMT+1

Loved it there needs to be more mods like this
