Description:

Vela Pax is going to be a 6 map, single player episode for PRBoom+ (or a Boom compatible, strong limit removing port) using mostly Doom II stock resources. I will add COOP starts but I have no idea how well actual COOP play will work out since this is primarily singleplayer. The maps will be playable from pistol start and will range somewhere from medium to large in size and scope. Gameplay will likely vary from map to map although I plan on having the set to be somewhat difficult as a whole. The 6 maps will be roughly separated into two episodes; human constructions/techbase for the first three maps which will progress into brick/gothic/hell for the latter three maps. I'll be using new skies and module music...and maybe a graphical replacement here and there, but otherwise it will be using classic resources. Basically I'm doing this for practice/fun and so I can get some feedback on my single player mapping once released. Some of you may already know about my shiny new in-progress megawad Supplice (for which the test map was being made). So my idea is to get some good practice and feedback on this project so that I can then apply it to Supplice as well as the other projects I'm contributing to. I haven't done much serious single player mapping, so hopefully this will give me a little more experience.

Question, comments, and/or cookies are welcome!

Progress:
MAP01: Excella - 5%ish
MAP02: Pinion - 0%
MAP03: Substruct - Done
MAP04: Faxanadu - 0%
MAP05: Delirium - 35%ish (original map here)
MAP06: Dreamsnake - 0%

Looks good.
Detail seems balanced, but the light ambience is plain.

Looks pretty sweet Mechadon, nice to see you using stock Doom 2 resources.

Mechadon writes:17.03.2010, 01:16 GMT+1

Thanks Dutch! I've enjoyed working with the stock texures.

@Karnizero: Whoops! I forgot to mention that none of the lighting has been done yet. All I've done so far is layout/architecture/detailing. I'll likely do lighting right before I work on the main gameplay elements :)

Nice use of stock Doom 2 textures.

Mechadon needs experience !?!? Ha ha ha, this is a funny comment from you (in some very positive sense). I really feel that for your DM-SP transition, your only concern is on the monsters placement; don't think mapping's an issue :=) As for the urge to use D2 textures, well, why is everebody (a good amount) rushing on that? D2 Textures are as ugly as it can get. There is 23689 '94 styled wads ... but if trying to get original with it is a goal, well this is interesting. Be good :-)))

Heh, yea I guess I'm just not as comfortable as I would like to be when it comes to the larger gameplay aspects of singleplayer mapping. Just because I haven't done it in a serious manner in FOREVER :P.

The main idea behind me using just stock Doom textures was mostly to keep the project as a whole simple and just focus on mapping. Although I have to say I do enjoy working with just stock textures...and if your numbers are right (lol) then I guess I'm not the only one. Although I did break down the other day and add Doom 1 textures and two liquid fall textures (water and lava)...so it's not 100% pure stock. But it's close enough :P

Thanks for the comment :D

:)) I'll give it some more thoughts when it's available. Good work.

I posted some new shots today in the Doomworld thread. I also modified this page with some new shots, so they should be up shortly. In the meantime, you can check out a pile of screenshots here: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/50158-wip-vela-pax/

I finished up the layout, detailing, and lighting on this map (which is now MAP03). I'll get some new screenshots up sometime soon. In the meantime, you can see the latest shots here.

MAP03: Substruct has been finished! I have updated the screenshots; they should be up sometime soon. In the meantime, feel free to check out the final shots of MAP03 here.

This reeks of sexiness. The sky + lighting + textures provide a good atmosphere!

I started work on MAP05 of this project today. It's going to be an expanded, updated, and detailed version of Dominion of Madness (as I'm sure I've stated numerous times already :P). I will get shots up when I have something worth showing.

Mechadon writes:27.06.2010, 07:05 GMT+1

I posted some shots of the in-progress MAP05 today in the Doomworld thread. You can get a glimpse at them here. I wanted to update the shots here but it seems my last update hasn't went through yet. So it won't let me do it :/. In the mean time, if your interested, check back at that Doomworld thread for updates.

Mechadon writes:07.07.2010, 06:53 GMT+1

Some new shots of MAP05 again. Check them out here. I'll update the above screenshots and info...whenever my last update goes through :P. How often are the entries updated anyways?

Mechadon writes:28.07.2010, 17:11 GMT+1

I'm not sure why my description disappeared, but I sent in a fix so hopefully it'll be back up soon.

Dutch Devil writes:28.07.2010, 19:39 GMT+1

Who needs a description when you have 3 beautifull screens to look at :)

Mechadon writes:30.07.2010, 20:11 GMT+1

Well, you got me there dutch XD

Mechadon writes:10.09.2010, 05:51 GMT+1

Just a heads-up: I've had this project on hold for the past few weeks. I've been in the process of buying/building a new computer and, for the time being, I'm stuck on my much older back-up machine. Hopefully I'll be able to start back up on this in a week-ish.
